China, the mysterious and ancient civilization of the East, has been a source of fascination for centuries, with Chinese goods such as tea, porcelain and silk highly sought after as valuable trading commodities which could make nations rich.

The discovery of the sea route to China introduced a new era of trade, opening up possibilities of exchange far exceeding those previously available through the overland caravan route.

This meeting of East and West was far from smooth, however, breaking down one empire and before creating another.

As a maritime nation, Denmark was a part of this international adventure in overseas trade, with Danish seafarers playing an important part in creating the Danish trade environment we know today.

This exhibition brings to life the stories of people, businesses, goods and cultural exchanges between the distant countries of Denmark and China over 300 years.
