The story behind the man
Yue-Minjun (b. 1962) is one of the world's leading contemporary artists. He is ambiguous in his art, just as HC Andersen was. Yue Minjun's sculpture is laughing, but laughing happily or hysterically? This ambiguity is also seen in Hans Christian Andersen's work. You can read Hans Christian Andersen as a child, and you can re-interpret him as an adult.
Yue Minjun works in a wide number of formats, from painting, sculpture, to installation art. He is best known for his distinctive portrayals of hysterical laughing and pink people, all of which are portraits of Minjun himself.
Yue Minjun's sculpture was also produced in a 30 cm high bronze statuette. The figurine is the tangible evidence of the festival's main prize Nightingale. Pictured: Yue Minjun approving the model of the statuette before it is cast.
